History & Education
Trey started his financial career as an accounting major, but he quickly discovered that helping people make money was much more fulfilling than simply counting it. So, he switched majors, and in 2009, he graduated from Texas A&M University with a bachelor’s in finance. He became an advisor at Fidelity, where he met Michael Rahn a few years later, whom he reverently referred to as “The Dude.” Michael took Trey under his wing and became his mentor—helping Trey not only further his career, but identify how to best serve his clients and support their long-term success.
It was this pursuit of his clients’ best interests that led Trey to The Sum. The flat-fee service model opened doors to serve clients in a deeper, more comprehensive way, something he was passionate about.
Personal Life
Trey lives in The Woodlands with his wife Catye, whom he met (and later proposed to) at a CrossFit gym. They have three kids under 10 who keep them busy and laughing—Evie, their theater girl; Rooney, their dancer; and Bodie, the little brother who likes to use his new running skills to make sure Dad stays active. While the couple no longer does CrossFit (kids, you know), Trey still makes it a daily habit to lift in their garage gym, and they enjoy taking walks around their neighborhood as a family. They also love to travel, whether they’re hanging out at the beach or skiing in Colorado with the grandparents.
When he’s not “dadding” or working, Trey enjoys playing golf and watching football and hockey.
Fun Facts About Trey
What’s your favorite book or the book that has most impacted your life?
I really liked Fahrenheit 451, I thought that was an amazing book. But the one that has most impacted my life is probably Dale Carnegie’s How to Win Friends and Influence People. I always considered myself an introvert until I started this job, and after reading that book, I felt more confident and comfortable talking to people.
If you had to eat just one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Well, when you do CrossFit, you start thinking about nutrition more and viewing food as fuel. So since 2018, I’ve had the same lunch pretty much every day except for vacations. It’s salsa Verde chicken and a side of roasted sweet potatoes with salt, pepper, and avocado oil. Maybe one day I’ll get sick of it, but I’m not there yet.
If you could choose any superpower to have, what would it be?
Teleportation—I love traveling but I hate being on planes and driving places. Then I could snowboard and hit the beach in the same day!
What’s your favorite quote or saying?
My dad used to say this a lot, and his dad said it to him… “You can wish in one hand and spit in the other and see which one fills up first.”
As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I wanted to be a musician. In fact, I almost went to UNT—I tried out for their jazz band, and I was going to play bass. But as I was considering the colleges I’d been accepted to, my dad asked me, “What do you want most out of life?” And I said, “Honestly, I just want to be a dad.” From there, he asked me if I knew what the average musician made and pointed out that traveling would mean lots of time away from future kids… and I completely bailed on the idea.
Do you have a random talent or hobby?
I play the bass and guitar, and I can still walk on my hands, something I learned from CrossFit.
